GFC National Tour - Thousands of Girls Trained as Change Agents!

TeenPregnancyWeb  Car

In September and October 2008, GFC embarked on its first ever National Tour, presented by The Sephora Project. The National Tour was the catalyst for our nationwide expansion and the start of 100 Girl Action Teams throughout the United States!

The National Tour included Change Your World Trainings and Girl Action Zones at Sephora Stores nationwide. Check out some results below!

Change Your World Trainings - 2-hour trainings for girls in middle school or high school that teach what social change is and how to take action in your community!

  • More than 2,300 girls were trained at 25 schools! Each girl received a Girl Action Kit detailing how she can create change in her neighborhood, city or school. Check out the social change webs girls created about the community issues they want to change
  • We traveled more than 6,500 miles reaching girls in 11 cities
  • Following the trainings, hundreds of girls have joined our Girl Action Network
  • GFC Girl Action Teams will start at more than 70% of the schools where we offered Change Your World Trainings. This number is still growing!
  • GFC will expand to Richmond, VA where 8-10 new Girl Action Teams will start in January 2009

Girl Action Zones - held at Sephora Stores throughout the country, these information sessions introduced girls to GFC and invited them to identify their passions and join our Girl Action Network

  • Community members told us what they want to change and what they are passionate about. Check out the videos here!
  • Hundreds of community members were invited to join the GFC Girl Action Network and encouraged to take a stand for change in their community
  • GFC Staff brought Girl Action Zones to 10 Sephora stores in 10 cities throughout the U.S.

Meet the National Tour Trainers!

In September 2008, GFC will embark on our National Tour Presented by the Sephora Project. The tour includes Change Your World Trainings at more than 25 schools and organizations across the country! Meet the social change agents who will facilitate the GFC trainings:

Patricia Torres

Patriciatorres_head_shot Patricia is passionate about partnering with youth to create social change in cities across the U,S.! She has just completed a master’s program in International Urban Planning at the London School of Economics focused on infusing the voice and power of historically marginalized communities (ethnic minorities, women, youth) into city planning processes across the globe. Prior to that, Patricia spent three years with Girls For A Change Silicon Valley (GFC). Working her way from Program Manager to Program Director, she helped secure annual partnerships with over 60 schools and community-based organizations, and to recruit over 2,500 youth to the program. Prior to joining GFC, Patricia worked in Mexico City. She served as a grant writer and workshop presenter for SIEMBRA, an organization which partners with entrepreneurial indigenous girls and women in micro-enterprise, leadership skill development and reproductive-rights awareness building. In 2002, Patricia graduated with high honors from UC Berkeley with a major in Gender and Comparative Urban Studies, where she identified girls’ and women’s empowerment as key to democratic planning for healthy cities worldwide. As a student, she participated in numerous community projects ranging from teaching a class on local and global activism, advocating for local homeless communities, to collaborating with youth on environmental justice campaigns. Patricia is also fluent in Spanish.

Kelly C. Weiley

Kw_head_shot Kelly is excited to meet and work with amazing women and girls on the GFC National Tour to create social change! Kelly is currently a member of Adjunct Faculty at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota teaching courses that focus on race, class, and gender in the United States. Kelly was awarded her Master of Science in Social Responsibility from St. Cloud State University in 2007 concentrating her studies on multicultural and social justice education and indigenous and international service-learning. She has published two book chapters on her research that suggest that globally-focused service-learning projects with a social justice, anti-racist, anti-colonial, liberatory framework demonstrate potential to move students away from a   charity-based model of doing-for to a solidarity-based model of working-with. After completing her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University, she volunteered for two years completing over 12 different service projects in communities throughout the Western United States with AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps. Following AmeriCorps, she lived in Boston, MA partnering with the Boston Private Industry Council and Boston Public Schools Year 13 program working with students from mostly low income, immigrant, and refugee families and received the prestigious PIC Achiever Award from the Boston Private Industry Council for her commitment to youth. Kelly also serves as an active board member of an international non-profit organization, Fifty Lanterns International, whose goal is to offer safe, reliable, solar lighting to people in areas of strife and conflict prioritizing women and child headed households around the globe.

National Tour Details

Gfctour_map During the GFC National Tour, presented  by The Sephora Project, we will train more than 2,500 girls at schools and organizations throughout the country with our Change Your World Trainings. The trainings are free to schools and community organizations. During a 90-minute or 2-hour workshop, girls will learn about social change, discover a diverse group of social change role models, and get user-friendly tools and resources for starting change on their own! Each participant will receive GFC’s free Change Your World Action Kit, which is a how-to-guide for creating social change from start to finish. The workshop is followed by meaningful and interactive activities hosted by the sponsors of the National Tour.

During the tour, we'll stop at Girl Action Zones, which are interactive gatherings where girls and women learn about social change and the power they have to create it. Girls and women will discover their inner social change agent and their inner beauty at participating SEPHORA stores throughout the country. These 3 to 4 hour events inside the Sephora stores will include opportunities to discover what social change means, brainstorm what issues are important to women and girls and learn about ways GFC can support girls and women in creating change. GFC representatives will be on hand to guide girls and women through this process. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for GFC’s Action Network and be part of a network of women and girls throughout the world who are working on change projects. In addition, girls and women will have the chance to share what they are passionate about and how they want to address the issue they want to change by creating photo and video diaries that will be posted online on GFC’s Action Network.
